该习语来源于《圣经》。据说在东方国家,毒蛇若是进入屋内,主人就要请耍毒蛇的人来引诱它入袋,耍蛇人口念咒语,蛇为了不听咒语,将一只耳朵贴于地上,用尾巴塞住第二只耳朵。故英语中有“像毒蛇一样聋(as deaf as an adder)”一说法。据此,该习语比喻“充耳不闻”“置若罔闻”,也就是“不加理睬”“装聋卖傻”的意思。
