此习语源于20世纪20年代吸毒者所用的俚语。Shot原意为“注射”,最初该语是指“麻醉剂下的注射”。现在该语常用语口语,比喻指“兴奋剂,刺激物,激励”,常与“get, have, give”等词连用。有时候可以翻译为中文中的“强行针”。
