近些年来，餐饮礼仪越来越受到关注。其中有一则就是倡导使用“公筷公勺”，其目的不是为了防范他人，而是为了保护他人，防止可能的疾病从自己身上传染出去。
很多大酒店一般都会为客人提供两双筷子，也就是“公筷”和“私筷”。白色多为公筷，黑色多为私筷，“公筷”会比“私筷”略长一些。
那这里的“公筷”对应的英文怎么说呢？是“public chopsticks”吗？不是的。
“公筷”的地道表达应该是“Serving chopsticks”.
公筷不仅可以用来为自己夹菜，也可以为他人夹菜，起一个“服务”的作用，所以“公筷”就被翻译为“Serving chopsticks”.
同样地，“公勺”就可以说“serving spoon”.

在与老外进餐的时候，由于饮食文化差异，大家要格外注意“使用公筷”这一点。另外，外国人吃饭的时候比较讲究唯己主义，也就是自己吃自己的，大家尽量不要去为他人夹菜，避免引起不必要的尴尬。

Q：Do you think it’s important to make restaurant reservations?
你认为预定餐厅很重要吗?
A：I think it’s a must. If you gonna go to any of the nicer restaurants. You need to be able to make reservation.
我认为这是必须的。如果你想去更好的餐厅的话。你需要提前预订。
在国外，餐厅预订是常见的现象。特别是如果你是准备带很重要的人去吃饭时，你绝对不想撞大运（take your chances）。所以只要是你想去的餐厅接受预定，最好还是提前预定安排上。
Q：How long in advance can I make restaurant reservations?
我可以提前多久预订餐厅?
A：If you’re making a reservation for a very popular restaurant for Friday night or Saturday night, you probably gonna wanna call at least a week or two in advance. A couple hours might not do that for you unless there's been a cancelation. But if it’s a lower tier restaurant, typically you can call a day in advance or few hours in advance and be able to get in. If you’re looking for a reservation for Valentine’s Day or Mother’s day, you better be calling about 2-3 months in advance.
如果你在为周五或周六晚上预定一家非常受欢迎的餐厅，可能需要至少提前一两个星期打电话。几个小时可能对你没有任何帮助，除非有人取消预约。但如果是低档餐厅，可以提前一天或几个小时打电话就可以了。如果你想预订情人节或母亲节当晚的桌子，你最好提前2-3个月就打电话安排上。
母亲节极有可能是美国全年最难预定位置的日子，据说甚至困难程度甚至超过情人节。
Q: what is “walk-in”?
什么是所谓的“walk-in”?
A: Definition of walk in: Hotel industry term for a guest who arrives without reservation.
Walk-in的定义:酒店业术语，指没有预定就来了的客人。
作为一个walk-in，并不代表你完全没有机会。在诸如周中的前两天的晚上，餐厅的生意一般会比较的低迷（slow），这个时候不预定也是有很大机会有位置的。而有些餐厅会在你等位期间提供一个接待台（reception），另外很多餐厅的入口处就是吧台，你也可以在吧台先点上一杯饮料，和朋友聊聊天来消磨些时光（kill some time）。
Q: What should we say when it comes to making reservation for a table?
谈到预订座位，我们该说些什么呢?
A: First, ask if the restaurant you wanna go takes reservation. If yes, you might get a question regarding what time you want to have your reservation. Our suggestion is be prepared and you can have it all written down and just read to them.
首先，咨询一下你想去的餐厅是否接受预订。如果是的话，你可能会得到有关想要预订时间的问题。建议大家做好准备，可以把这些都写下来，然后读给他们听。
比如：
I would like to have a reservation for this Friday at 6pm for 4 people.
我想预定本周五下午6点4个人的位置。
一次性交代清楚你要提供的最为关键的信息能够帮助你有效的预定到位置。但也有可能他会告诉你这个时间段不可以。能不能换到另一个时间段。这个时候你就要注意听他说的时间段了。

Q: What if I can’t make it because of some emergencies?
万一我有急事不能来怎么办?
A: You should call the restaurant and cancel your reservation as soon as you realize you can’t make it. Be aware, some restaurants, mainly popular, high-class restaurants will ask for your credit card number when accepting your reservation and they will charge a “no-show fee” if you don’t show up.
你应该一发现不能去了就打电话给餐馆取消你的预订。请注意，一些餐馆，主要是受欢迎的高级餐馆，在接受你的预订时会询问你的信用卡号码，如果你不来，他们会收取“不到场费”。
Moreover, please show up on time. No restaurant will keep your table for you for the entire night.

Q：Buffet is extremely popular in China, but dinning experiences of buffet restaurants are not always satisfying. So, other than buffet restaurants, are there any other options?

A: Buffet is certainly the most convenient one and also very friendly to non-English speakers. Many hotels provide free breakfast buffet to their guests. But most buffet restaurants also open during lunchtime and dinnertime. All you need to do is to pay an entrance fee and you can start to grab anything you want to eat from counters (alcoholic drinks are mainly excluded which means you have to order and pay for them separately).
自助餐当然是最方便的，而且对非英语国家的人也很友好。许多酒店为客人提供免费的自助早餐。但大多数自助餐厅也在午餐和晚餐时间营业。你所需要做的就是支付一笔入场费，然后你就可以开始在柜台上买你想吃的任何东西(酒精饮料主要不包括在内，这意味着你必须分别点餐和付款)。
In restaurant terminology a table d'hôte menu is a menu where multi-course meals with only a few choices are charged at a fixed total price. Such a menu may be called prix fixe ("fixed price"). The terms set meal and set menu are also used. The cutlery on the table may also already be set for all of the courses.
在餐馆术语中，“table d’hote menu”是一种菜单，其中的多道菜、是以只有几种选择的套餐以并固定的总价收取费用的形式出现的。这样的菜单可以称为固定价格(“fixed price)。也被称作set meal或者set menu。在套餐中，餐桌上的餐具也可能已经在事先准备好了。
Table d'hôte contrasts with à la Carte, where customers may order any of the separately priced menu items available. You have to order everything, from starter to dessert by yourself based on your preference, which could be challenging for some people.
Table d 'hote与a la carte形成对比，在后者中，顾客可以点任何单独定价的菜单项。你必须根据自己的喜好点餐，从开胃菜到甜点，这对有些人来说是一个挑战。

Q：what about special demands like food allergy, or smoking area?
对食物过敏或吸烟区等特殊需求怎么办?
A：If you’re allergic to certain food, you can mention it during your phone call when making a restaurant reservation. For example, if you’re allergic to flour, you can ask if they provide gluten free dishes.
如果你对某些食物过敏，可以在预订餐厅时打电话时提及。例如，如果你对面粉过敏，你可以问他们是否提供无麸质食物。
If you’re a vegetarian, you can ask if they provide vegan dishes during your call.

If you want a table next to window or in a relatively quiet corner, you’d better mention it during your call.

Regarding smoking area, some restaurants in other countries will have a certain area where you can smoke. However, that’s not the case in America. It’s strictly forbidden to smoke in any restaurant in America, except for cigar bars. So if you don't see an ashtray on the table, don’t even bother to ask for one.
