　　副词和动词的-ing形式，动词-ing形式有两种词性，即动名词和现在分词。遇到动词-ing形式时，需要根据“语法环境”判断它是动名词还是现在分词。如果是动名词，它实际上是一种名词形式，修饰语应该是形容词，而不是副词。

　　胡锦涛指出，当前，由于受国际金融危机和世界经济增长明显减速的影响……

　　误译：Hu Jintao pointed out that，at present，due to the internationalfinancial crisis and the obviously slowing down of the world economy...

　　第二，吸收外资的法律环境不断开放和完善

　　误译：Secondly，the constantly perfecting and opening up of the legal environment in attracting foreign investment is under way．

　　近年来，随着中国经济社会的发展、城市化进程的不断加快…

　　误译：In recent years，with the development of China's economy and society and the continually accelerating of the process of urbanization...

　　译者在这三个句子中都把动词的-ing形式视为动名词，并在前面加了定冠词。既然是名词，其修饰语则应该是形容词，而不应是副词。如果改为形容词，即the obvious slowing down，the constant perfecting和the continual accelerating，则问题就解决了。

　　但是，动词的-ing形式也可以是现在分词，而现在分词则带有动词的性质。所以在这种语法环境中，则可以用副词作为修饰语，如：

　　和平利用外层空间(标题)

　　Peacefully Taking Advantage of Outer Space

　　药箱仅是一个临时存放场所而已i

　　Medical kits are only the places for temporarily storing medicines．

　　第一个句子在语法上是对的，在这里不可以使用形容词peaceful。但是我们可以把句子改为The Peaceful Exploitation of outer Space，这样会更自然一些。第二个句子中的一ing形式也是现在分词，所以也应该使用副词来修饰。

　　动词的一ing形式是一个很容易使翻译员感到困惑的语法现象。我们在翻译的时候要认真分析到底是动名词还是现在分词，以便正确使用修饰语。如果没有把握，可以改用名词，这样就可以放心地使用形容词作为修饰语，从而避免这一问题。

　　4.关于blindly

　　我们在“副词和状语”这一章中看到，有些副词的含义与其相关形式形容词的含义不同。除了在“副词和状语”这一章中提到的一些词外，blindly也属于这一类副词。它基本上等同于中文的副词“盲目地”，但是其形容词bfind则主要是指“失明”。由于这两个词含义不同，没有经验的翻译员经常在使用时出错，例如：

　　城市化无疑是中国走向现代化的必然选择，但一窝蜂的“国际化”造城运动将给城市建设带来致命伤。

　　误译：Urbanization is，undoubtedly，a necessary choice in China’s move towards modernization．However，a blind bee-like campaign to create“internationalized”cities will fatally damage the construction of cities．

　　中国不少知名景区都有过这样的经历，由于追求短期效益而进行盲目开发，导致生态退化和资源破坏。

　　误译：Quite a number of famous scenic zones in China have had this experience：because they pursued short—term interests and carried out blind development，this led to ecological degradation and the destruction of resources．

　　这两个句子都用了blind。在英语为母语的人看来，这表示的是～种没有视力的行为，所以不仅不自然，而且几乎是荒谬的。在“副词和状语”这一章还列出其他一些容易弄错的副词，如hardly、shortly、apparently和obviously。当我们用这些词的时候，一定要了解它们的真实含义。

　　5.关于today

　　英语词today既可以是副词，也可以是名词，但是当作为名词的时候，其用法受到一定的限制。初学者经常把today用来取代英语中另一个意思相近的词，即present，如：

　　中国和整个世界的过去和现在都证明了这样一个无可辩驳的事实……

　　误译：For China and the whole world，their past and today all have proved such an irrefutable fact that...

　　这里不应该用today，而应该用their past and present。
